for Fluency
MODEL Tell students that good silent readers
block out other noises and concentrate on what
they are reading. Point out that they also self-correct
when they misread or skip a word. Then model, reading
p. 3 of the Leveled Reader The Colonial Adventure. Discuss how being a good silent reader will help students understand and remember what they read.
PRACTICE Have individuals find a comfortable place
to silently reread passages from The Colonial
Adventure. Remind them to self-correct if they
misread or skip a word. Then have partners reread
passages aloud. For optimal fluency, students should
reread three or four times. As students read, monitor
fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess any
students you have not yet checked during this unit.
