Build Background
ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A WEB about gardening.
  • Write "Gardening" in the center of the web. Have students work in small groups
to brainstorm more about gardening. Give them two to three minutes to write as
many things as they can think of that relate to the topic.
  • Record some of the group's ideas on connecting lines in the web, but leave
space for additional facts and details from the story.
  • As students read the story, remind them to make notes about facts and details
    to include in the web.

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and Don't Know.
Read each word to students and have them mark one of the three columns: Know (know
and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the word; don't know meaning); Don't
Know
(don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out that some
of this week's words have endings (-s, -es, -ing), and students may learn new definitions for
these words.
Word Structure • Endings
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make changes to their
ratings.
Discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words with students. Ask them questions, such
as the following, to help clarify meaning.
  • If there are showers today, do you think I should bring my umbrella?
  • Do you want to doze during boring movies?
  • When is this flower supposed to begin blooming?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
