NEW LITERACIES
Internet Inquiry Activity
EXPLORE GARDENS
Use the following 5-day plan to help students conduct this week's Internet inquiry activity
on gardens. Remind students to follow classroom rules when using the Internet.
DAY 1
DAY 2
DAY 4
DAY 3
Identify Questions Discuss the lesson focus question: How can gardens
enrich our lives?
Brainstorm ideas for specific inquiry questions about gardens.
For example, students might want to find out which plants attract butterflies or
when to plant tulip bulbs. Have students work individually, in pairs, or in small
groups to write an inquiry question they want to answer.
Navigate/Search Have students begin a simple Internet search using a student-
friendly search engine. Remind students that using too many keywords may not
provide the best search results. Discuss how to use the search engine results to
identify a few helpful Web sites. Have students read brief descriptions about each Web site and select a few to analyze on Day 3.
Analyze Have students explore the Web sites they identified on Day 2. Tell them
to scan each site for information that helps answer their inquiry questions.
Students may need to do additional searching if more information or different
information is needed to answer their questions. Students can print out or take
notes about relevant information.
Synthesize Have students organize the information from Day 3. Remind them
that when they organize, they pull information together and arrange it in an
orderly, functional way. Organizing information will help students develop answers to their inquiry questions.
Communicate Have students share their inquiry results. They can use a word
processing program to write a short summary of a particular plant for a garden
center brochure.
DAY 5
RESEARCH/STUDY SKILLS
Card Catalog/Database
TEACH
Ask students if they have ever looked up a book or a subject in the library. Did
they use the card catalog? Did they use the computer database? Write the
information from this computer screen on the board and then introduce the
terms shown below.
Card Catalog/Database
  • If you are researching a particular subject, search for a
book using the topic. Type in general words
    to describe the subject.
  • If you know the author or book title you are looking for,
search by author or title. Use the title of the book or
    last name of the author.
  • The call number tells you where to look for the book.
In the Dewey Decimal system, nonfiction books are
arranged in numerical order. Fiction books are arranged
alphabetically by the author's last name.
Once students are familiar with the items in a book entry,
discuss the answers to these questions.

  1. What subject might a person have searched for to
get this entry? (Possible response: farming)
  2. What word would you type to do an author search for this book? (Collins)

ASSESS
Give students books from the classroom. Have them find and write the title and author of
their book. Then ask them to identify a word or words that might be used to locate this
book in a subject search.
For more practice or to assess students, use Practice Book 3.1, p. 110.
