Target Skill SKILL AUTHOR'S PURPOSE An author's purpose is the
reason an author writes something. An author may be trying to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or to express ideas and feelings. An author may have different purposes in different parts of a piece of writing.
Target Skill STRATEGY SUMMARIZE When you summarize, you
tell the main ideas and details of a piece of writing. Summarizing the main ideas and details as you
read can help you figure out the author's purpose.
For example, are you reading facts that explain
something? Then the author's purpose is probably
to inform.
SKILL CHARACTERIZATION Expressing characterization means that you read the words as if you were the character.
