DAY 2
Vocabulary Strategy
OBJECTIVE
Target Skill Use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
INTRODUCE
Discuss the context clues strategy for
unfamiliar words using the steps on
p. 356.
TEACH
  • Have students read "Breaking
the Ice," paying attention to how vocabulary is used.
  • Model using context clues to
    determine the meaning of bay.
Think Aloud MODEL The word bay is used on p. 357. The article describes the "waterfront village" where "villagers called the icebreaker for help." So a bay must be a body of water that is surrounded on many sides by something, such as ice or land.
Whole Group Discuss the
Question of the Day. Then
use pp. 356–359.
Group Time
Differentiated Instruction
Read A Symphony of Whales. See pp. 354f–354g for the
small group lesson plan.
Reading
Language Arts
Use pp. 379e–379h and
379k–379m.
Whole Group Use pp. 379a
and 379i.
DAY 2
Grouping Options
PRACTICE AND ASSESS
  • Have students determine the
meanings of the remaining words and explain the context clues they used.
  • Point out that context does not
    work with every word. Students
may have to use the glossary or a dictionary to find the exact meaning of some words.
  • Have students reassess their
    usage and definitions of
vocabulary words used in their word meaning charts.
  • Have students complete
    Practice Book 3.1 p. 135.
WRITE Writing should include
vocabulary words that clearly describe one of the pictures from the story.
Monitor Progress
then… use Tested Vocabulary Cards.
If… students need more practice with the lesson vocabulary,

Words to Know
3.
2.
1.
As you read “Breaking the Ice,” use context
clues to help you understand the meanings of
the vocabulary words.
Try that meaning in the sentence. Does it
make sense?
If not, use the words and sentences to predict
a meaning for the word.
Read the words and sentences around the
word you don’t know. Sometimes the author
tells you what the word means.
Context Clues Sometimes when you are reading,
you come across a word you don’t know. How
can you figure out what the word means? Look
for context clues. Context clues are the words
and sentences around the word. They can help
you figure out the meaning of the word.

Vocabulary Strategy
Breaking the Ice
The ship had to cut a path
through the ice on the bay.
The people were nervous and
watched the ship
anxiously.
They chipped  away the ice
around the dock so that the
ship could get close enough
to unload the supplies. As the
ship sailed away, the villagers
began to sing a song. Josh did
not know the
melody, or
tune, but he enjoyed the

symphony of voices
saying thank you.
the village over land, so the
villagers called the icebreaker
for help.
     Josh likes helping people.
One winter, a waterfront
village on a
 bay in the far
north had been buried by

blizzards. The people were
running out of food and other

supplies. No one could get to
Josh is a sailor on a
Canadian icebreaker. An
icebreaker is a ship with a
heavy steel bow, or front, that
it uses to break through ice.
Sometimes a ship,
surrounded
on all sides by ice, becomes
trapped and can’t move. The
icebreaker cuts a
channel
through the ice so that the
ship can sail to safety.
Remember
Try the strategy.
Then, if you need
more help, use
your glossary or
a dictionary.

Access Content Use ELL Poster 14 to preteach vocabulary. Choose from the
following to meet language proficiency levels.
Beginning Point out clues in the second sentence of paragraph three on
p. 357 that show that anxiously means "nervously."
Intermediate After reading, students can create a two-column chart with
water-related words in one column and music-related words in the other.
Advanced Teach the lesson on pp. 356–357. Students can report on the names of these different water bodies in their home languages.
Resources for home-language words may include parents, bilingual staff members, bilingual dictionaries, or online translation sources.
Target Skill Context Clues Have students work in pairs to follow the steps on
p. 356. Encourage them to list clues for an unknown word and then decide
together the best meaning for it.
