Target Skill STRATEGY DICTIONARY
A dictionary is a book that gives words and their meanings. The words in the dictionary are listed in alphabetical order. You can use the dictionary to learn the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Target Skill SKILL COMPARE/CONTRAST To compare means to
tell how two or more things are alike. To contrast means to tell how two or more things are different.
Target Skill STRATEGY MONITOR AND FIX UP To compare and
contrast things, check your understanding as you read. Read more slowly so that you'll notice details, key words, and other clues the author uses to explain how things are alike and different.
SKILL READ SILENTLY To read silently means to read to yourself. As you read silently, read with accuracy; that is, say the words correctly and don't put in or leave out any words. Correct yourself when you misread.
