ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A T-CHART about volcanoes.
  • Label the columns of the T-chart as shown below.
  • Give students two to three minutes to think of as many facts as they can
about volcanoes. Write their ideas in the left-hand column of the T-chart.
  • Allow the same amount of time for students to think of several questions
about volcanoes. Write their questions in the right-hand column of the chart.
Add questions of your own if necessary.
  • Direct students to look for answers to the questions as they read the
selection. When they finish reading, write the answers, as well as any new
    information, in the chart.

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and Don’t
Know
.
Read each word to students and have them mark one of the three columns:
Know (know and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the word; don’t
know meaning); Don’t Know (don’t know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point
out that some of this week’s words have to do with the ways that Earth
changes (volcanoes, earthquakes).
Unfamiliar Words • Dictionary
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make
changes to their ratings.
Discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words with students. Ask them
questions, such as the following, to help clarify meaning.
  • Have you ever seen colorful fireworks explode in the sky on the Fourth
    of July?
  • With how much force do you need to hit a baseball in order to hit a
    home run?
  • What do you keep beneath your bed?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
