TEACH
In words with wr, kn, mb, or gn,
the consonants create only one
sound. Demonstrate this to
students by writing the spelling words on the board and underlining both consonants. Have students
say and spell each word out loud.
climb
FIND THE PATTERN Have students identify the silent consonant in each list word.

WRITE A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
Ask students to write a newspaper article using at least three of the spelling words. Have students share their articles with the class by reading them aloud, or creating a class newspaper to display their work.
These words are difficult for
third-graders to spell because
of the silent letters. Alert
students to these frequently
misspelled words and
encourage them to think
carefully before they write
them.
Students can practice reading these high frequency words to develop automatic recognition.

REVIEW WORDS WITH wr,
kn, mb, gn
Encourage students to create a secret code for each consonant pair. Each student should choose a symbol or number to stand for each consonant pair. Have students write each spelling word, using letters and a symbol or number. Students can then exchange their lists to figure out which consonant pair each symbol or number stands for.
Spelling Strategy
Silent Letters
Point out to students that some letter combinations have silent letters. Review common consonant pairs and words that include these blends.
