DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader Gardening with Grandpa
Gardening with GrandpaModel how to use the illustrations to retell pp. 3–6. Then ask students to retell Gardening with Grandpa, illustration by illustration. Prompt them as needed.
  • Tell me what this story is about in a few sentences.
  • What else happened in this story?
  • How does this story remind you of other stories?
2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader Gardening with Grandpa, using appropriate expression and intonation for the characters’ words as well as the narrator’s. Have students note the expression and intonation in your voice. Then read pp. 5–6 in a monotone, with no expression. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how reading with appropriate expression and intonation will help students understand and enjoy what they read.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Gardening with Grandpa with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
