Tulips for Annie’s Mother with appropriate
expression and intonation for both the characters’
and the narrator’s words. Have students note the rise
and fall of your voice and the feelings you convey.
Discuss how reading with expression and intonation
will help them understand and enjoy what they read.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Tulips for Annie’s Mother with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, students should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Week 3.
