Read Leveled Reader The Elk Hunters
The Elk HuntersREINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is explaining nature. For thousands of years, people have tried to explain the world around them. What things about nature would you like to have explained?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text, focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 4 What appears above the elk in this picture? (a group of stars; the Big Dipper) A group of stars is called a constellation.
pp. 5–6 Who do you think these people are? (Native Americans) Yes. They needed to work together to solve their problems.
Read pp. 3–4 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 5–8. Ask: What things about the world of the Snohomish does this story explain? (why people speak different languages, why a certain group of stars is in the sky, why people still shout "heave-ho!")

PREFIXES UN-, RE-, MIS-, DIS- Write unkind. When I see a word like this, I break it into parts to read it. Cover the prefix un-. I see the base word kind. I know what kind means. Uncover the prefix. Un- is a prefix that can mean "not," so I know the word unkind means "not kind." Repeat with reread, explaining that the prefix re- means "again." Repeat with misbehave, explaining that the prefix mis- can mean "badly." Repeat with displeased, explaining that the prefix dis- can mean "not."
