If… students have difficulty reading story words from the Decodable Reader,
then… reteach them by modeling blending or reading multisyllabic words.
If… partners have difficulty reading the Leveled Reader on their own,
then… have them follow along as they listen to the Online Leveled Reader Audio.
The Gardener Group Time
Leveled Reader Gardening with Grandpa
REINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is gardens enriching lives. Even city people can get a bit of nature by having a garden. What kinds of gardens do you know about?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 6 What are the girls and their grandpa doing? (digging holes and planting in a garden) The garden has brought them together.
p. 8 What are the girls doing? (looking at books to get seeds) These books are called seed catalogs.
Read pp. 3–5 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 6–8. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: What did Gramps teach Judy and May about gardens? (how to plant bulbs, which flowers to choose, what tools to use)

CONTRACTIONSA contraction is a shortened form of two words. In a contraction, an apostrophe takes the place of letters that were dropped. Write you've. I see that this is a contraction. What two words does this contraction stand for?(you have)What letters were replaced by the apostrophe? (h and a) I say the contraction as one word. Model blending you've. Have students blend the word with you. Repeat this process with isn't.
