DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader The Elk Hunters
The Elk HuntersModel how to skim to retell pp. 3–6. Then ask students to retell the book by skimming, page by page. Prompt as needed.

  • Why do you think the author wrote this story?
  • How does this remind you of other stories you have heard or read?
2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 6–7 of the Leveled Reader The Elk Hunters, emphasizing expression in your voice. Ask students to pay attention to the expression you use as you read the narrator’s statements and exclamations. Have them note how your voice changes when you read the words of each leader. Then reread p. 7, this time in a monotone voice for the narrator and leaders. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how reading with expression will help students understand and enjoy what they read.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The Elk Hunters with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Use p. 329a to assess the fluency of students in this group.
