for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader Paws and Claws,
emphasizing appropriate phrasing. Have students note how you pause at commas and periods and group related words together in meaningful phrases. Then read pp. 5–6 word by word without pausing. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how reading with appropriate phrasing will help students better understand what they read.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Paws and Claws
with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
