Mount St. Helens
Mount St. HelensBEFORE READING Have
students create webs with
Mount St. Helens Eruption
in the
center.
This book tells about the
eruption of a volcano called Mount
St. Helens and how it affected the
surrounding area. As you read,
add facts and details about the
eruption to your web.
DURING READING Have students follow along as you read pp. 3–7. Then let them complete the book on their own. Remind students to add facts and details to their webs as they read.
AFTER READING Have students compare the facts on their webs. Point out that facts they learn about Mount St. Helens will help them as they read tomorrow’s selection, Volcanoes: Nature’s Incredible Fireworks.

Earth MovementBEFORE READING Recall the
Read Aloud “Hurricane.”
What
should you do if a hurricane
is predicted to hit near where
you live. Why?
(Evacuate
because hurricanes are
powerful storms that can cause
death and damage.)
Today you
will read about scientists who
try to predict natural disasters
in order to prevent injuries
and deaths.
CRITICAL THINKING Have students read the Leveled Reader independently. Encourage them to think critically. For example, ask:
  • How are earthquakes and volcanoes related?
  • How have monitoring and predicting volcanic eruptions changed over time?
AFTER READING Have students review the selection to find at least five words that they find difficult or intriguing. Have them look up and write the definition for each one. Then ask them to write a paragraph that includes all the words. Have students meet with you to discuss the selection and the paragraphs they wrote.
