Centers Survival Kit to organize this week's centers.

Listen to Wings and "Beauty and the Beast" as you follow or read along in your book. Listen for examples of cause and effect in Wings.
If there is anything you don't understand, you can listen again to any section.
MATERIALS
Collection of books for
self-selected reading,
reading log
Select a book you have already
read. Record the title of the book
in your reading log. You may want
to read with a partner.
You may choose to read any of the following:
- Leveled Readers
- ELL Readers
- Stories written by classmates
- Books from the library
- Wings
TEN IMPORTANT SENTENCES
Read the Ten Important Sentences
for Wings. Then locate the
sentences in the Student Edition.
BOOK CLUB Look at "Meet Authors"
on p. 421 of the Student Edition
to help you set up an author/
illustrator study of Christopher
Myers. Read other books by Myers
and share your favorites.

MATERIALS
Paper, pen or pencil,
clock with second hand
or timer, dictionary
- Write the words from the
word bank below on a blank
piece of paper.
- Working with a partner, see
how many new two-syllable
words you can make out of
the words' letters in one
minute. Write the new words.
- If you are not sure if a word is correct, check a dictionary.
- Give yourself one point for
each correct word.
- Exchange lists with your
partner and read your lists
aloud. Cross off any words
that you both have and count
those words that only one of
you thought of.

Plan a fantasy.
- Take a couple of minutes to outline the rough idea for a fantasy. Think about the characters and what will happen.
- Come up with a title for your fantasy.
- Include a list of characters and a description of the setting.
- Make sure your fantasy has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Make a list of classroom rules
to follow.
- Create a list of rules for
fairness and equality in the classroom.
- As you write your list, think
about how you like to be
treated.
- Get together with a group
and compare lists.
- Choosing from everyone's
lists, come up with an official
class rulebook.
EARLY FINISHERS Create a
poster for the classroom displaying
official class rules. Make sure the
rules are visible. Use illustrations
to dress up the poster.
Write a short narrative about a time
you felt lonely.
- Open a word processing
program by double-clicking
on the icon.
- Write a short description of
a time when you felt lonely.
- When you are finished typing
your narrative, check your
spelling. Click on the spelling
icon on the menu bar.
- Save your file by selecting
"Save As" under the "File"
menu at the top of the screen. Don't forget to set the source for the saved file, such as the desktop or your own file.
