TEACH
Some plurals are formed in
irregular ways. This can include
changing the final letter in the base
word before adding -s, or using a
whole new word in the plural form.
Show students these changes by
writing each spelling word on the
board, along with the singular form
of the word. Encourage students to
point out the differences between
the two words and write these
changes on the board.

FIND THE PATTERN Have students identify the changes between singular and plural forms that do not simply add -s.

WRITE A POEM
Ask students to write a poem
using at least four of the spelling
words. The poem could be about
the student's family or community.
Have students share their poems
by reading them aloud to the class
or by posting them on the bulletin
board.
Words that change form can be difficult for third-graders to spell. Help students identify these frequently misspelled words and encourage them to think
carefully before they write them.
