STRATEGY CONTEXT CLUES Context clues are the words and sentences around a word whose meaning you aren't sure you know. Sometimes you come across a familiar word that doesn't make sense in the sentence. The word may have more than one meaning. Look for context clues that can help you figure out the correct meaning in the sentence.

SKILL GENERALIZE To generalize means to make
a broad statement or rule about how some things are mostly alike or all alike. Often, clue words such as most, many, all, or few signal that a statement is a generalization.
STRATEGY PRIOR KNOWLEDGE To generalize, look at a
number of examples and use prior knowledge—what you already know—to decide how the examples are alike, or mostly alike.
SKILL CHARACTERIZATION Characterization is the way an author describes and portrays a character. You show characterization by reading as if you were the character, showing the feelings of the character.
