STRATEGY CONTEXT CLUES Context clues are words and sentences around a word whose meaning you aren't sure you know. Sometimes you come across a familiar word that doesn't make sense in the sentence. The word may have more than one meaning. Look for context clues that can help you figure out which meaning is the right one for the sentence.

Target Skill SKILL FACT AND OPINION A fact is a statement that
tells something that can be proved true or false.
You can prove a fact by reading or asking an expert.
An opinion is a statement that tells someone's
ideas or feelings. Words that tell feelings, such
as should or best, are clues to opinions.
Target Skill STRATEGY MONITOR AND FIX UP To monitor means to
stop reading occasionally, and check to be sure
you understand what you're reading. Fix up means
to do something if you don't understand or are
confused about what you're reading. For example,
sometimes you may be confused by facts you
don't understand. You can ask an expert or use reference books to check whether a fact is true.
SKILL APPROPRIATE PHRASING Appropriate phrasing means reading groups or "chunks" of words that go together, rather than reading word for word. Appropriate phrasing also means pausing at the right places when you read. Punctuation marks, such as commas and periods, signal the right places to pause.
