ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A K-W-L CHART about eagles.
  • Prompt the students to write as much as they can about eagles. Give them two to three minutes to write.
  • Write the title "Eagles" above the K-W-L chart. Then record students' knowledge on the chart.
  • Tell students to write two to three questions they have about eagles. Write one or two questions of your own to get them started.
  • Remind students to look for answers to their questions as they read so they can record them on the chart.

DISCUSS THE VOCABULARY
Share lesson vocabulary with students. Have students locate each word in their
glossaries and note each word's pronunciation and meaning. Ask these questions
to help clarify word meanings.

What caused that gully in the farm field?
Where did you go after you scrambled out of sight?
What did the toddler think when his voice echoed through the hills?
What kind of reeds did you see along the river?
Who clutched the lucky rabbit's foot during the game?
Valley and gully are land features. What other words do you know that name land features? (Possible responses: cliff, dunes, mountains, hills)
