What does it mean to be unique?

Write the unit theme and Big Idea question on the board. Ask students to think about the selections they have read in the unit. Discuss how each selection and lesson concept can help them answer the Big Idea question from this unit.

Model this for students by choosing a selection and explaining how the selection and lesson concept address the Big Idea.

Postcards from a Special Place

Write a Postcard Have

students draw a picture of the place they are writing about before they compose the message. Drawing the picture will help them visualize the details they can then write about.

Schedule a Visit

Make a Schedule Have

students discuss what characters they would like to spend the day with and give reasons for their choices. Then have students complete their schedules. Suggest they remember to schedule time for a meal and a plan for transportation.

Wonderful, Wonderful Me

Make an Award Have students

make an award showing how they are unique and show it to the class. They should explain what unique quality their awards celebrate.

Suppose you are visiting one of the unique places you read
about in this unit. Write a postcard message that you might
send home. In your message, write about what makes the
place unique and what you find most impressive. Add a
picture to your postcard.

You met some unique characters as you read the selections
in this unit. Which of these characters would you most like to
have as a friend? What would you do if you spent the day
together? Make up a schedule for a day with this person.
Include some activities that the character would enjoy.

You have read about several characters, real and imagined,
who are special in some way. What makes you unique?
Make yourself a hat, a banner, a medal, or another award
that celebrates one way in which you are proud to be
unique.
