reading fluently,
then… provide
additional

by pairing

DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader The Lesson of Icarus
The Lesson of IcarusModel how to skim the book, retelling as you skim. Then ask
students to retell the book one episode at a time. Prompt them
as needed.
  • What did Daedalus build at the beginning of the story?
  • How did he help Theseus?
2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader The Lesson of
Icarus,
emphasizing an appropriate pace. Call attention to your pace
and accuracy. Then read pp. 5–6 too rapidly or too slowly, misreading or skipping words. Point out the words you skipped or misread. Discuss how reading accurately and at a reasonable pace makes what you read more understandable.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The Lesson of Icarus with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
