MODEL Read aloud p. 4 of the Leveled Reader Brave Settlers in a Strange Land. Call
attention to the fact that you have not skipped any words and that your rate of reading is at an understandable pace. Discuss why these reading behaviors are important. If necessary, provide an example of a paragraph read carelessly and too slowly or too fast.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Brave Settlers in a Strange Land with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this group during Week 3.
