Read Leveled Reader The Rock Kit
The Rock KitREINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is unique interests.
Many people with unique interests have hobbies that show what
their interests are. What hobbies do you have that make you one
of a kind?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text, focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 5 Look at the photograph. Why do you think there are numbers
on these rocks?
(The numbers are labels that identify the rocks.)
pp. 6–7 What does this diagram show? (layers of the Earth)
Read pp. 4–5 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 6–9. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner.
Ask: What unique interest did Grandpa have? (He was interested in rocks.)

Preteach Phonics
PREFIXES PRE-, MID-, OVER-, OUT- Write preheat. Remind students that
prefixes are word parts that can be added at the beginning of a base word.
Say:
Pre- is a prefix that means "before." Model blending preheat by covering the
prefix and reading the base word. Then uncover the prefix and read it. Blend and read
preheat, and then have students blend it with you. Repeat with midnight, overcook, and
outrun as examples of words with prefixes mid- (in the middle of), over- (too much),
and out- (better or greater than).
