DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader The Rock Kit
The Rock KitModel how to skim the book, retelling as you skim. Then ask
students to retell the book, two pages at a time. Prompt them
as needed.
  • What did you learn from reading these pages?
  • What was the author trying to teach us?

Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 4–5 of the Leveled Reader The Rock Kit, emphasizing
characterization. Have students notice how your voice changes as you use
characterization to read the dialogue. Then read p. 12 word-by-word in a monotone
voice. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how changing
your voice while reading dialogue creates a more realistic-sounding conversation.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The Rock Kit with a partner or
individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students
read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are
assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
