DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader The English Channel
The English ChannelModel how to use the photographs and captions to help you retell the information in the book. For example, you might retell p. 3: As you can see from these maps, the English Channel is a body of water between England and France. Then ask students to retell the book, one page at a time. Prompt them as needed.
  • What does the photograph on this page show?
  • What did you learn about the English Channel from reading this page?
2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–5 of the Leveled Reader The English Channel,
emphasizing appropriate phrasing. Have students note how you group words and
read phrases. Point out the inflection you use when you read a sentence that ends
in an exclamation mark, like the last sentence on p. 5. Then read pp. 6–7 word-by-
word in a monotone voice. Have students tell you which model sounded better.
Discuss how reading in phrases and paying attention to punctuation marks
creates a more pleasing rhythm.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The English Channel with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this group using p. 111a.
