Retell Leveled Reader Buck’s Way
Model how to retell the story using the illustrations, retelling as you view each image. Then ask students to retell the book, one illustration at a time. Prompt them as needed.
What is happening when the story begins?
What happens next?
How does the picture on this page help you remember the event?
for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–5 of the Leveled Reader Buck’s Way, emphasizing accuracy, appropriate pace or rate, and expression or intonation. Have students note how your voice reflects the different emotions as you read the narration when Buck is hopeful and when he fails. Also use expression when you read Buck’s words. Discuss how intonation can help get across the feelings described in the story.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Buck’s Way with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess any students you have not yet checked during this unit.
