for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud p. 3 of the Leveled Reader The Lost Dog, emphasizing accuracy, appropriate pace or rate, and expression or intonation. Have students note how your voice reflects the change in speakers and the change from speakers to narration. Discuss how intonation can help get across the feelings described in the story, as well as establish personality when reading dialogue.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The Lost Dog with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess any students you have not yet checked during this unit.
Revisit Leveled Reader Smart Dog
RETELL Have students retell the story in the Leveled Reader Smart Dog.
INVESTIGATIVE WORK Have students complete their dog
show charts. You may wish to
check their progress and see
if they need any assistance
finding appropriate sources of information. Have them present their projects.
