Build Background
ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A CONCEPT WEB about clothes around the world.
  • Give students two to three minutes to brainstorm ideas about clothes from different cultures.
  • Have them use a concept web (Graphic Organizer 15) to record their ideas. Students can add additional ovals as needed.
  • Direct students to look for details about clothes from other cultures as they read. Have them note these details on their concept webs.

BACKGROUND BUILDING AUDIO This week's audio explores the everyday experiences of an eleven-year-old Japanese boy. After students listen, discuss how his day-to-day experiences compare to their own.

WORD RATING CHART
Create story predictions charts to help students preview the selection title and
illustrations, and then predict what the story is about. Use the story predictions chart
(Graphic Organizer 6).
Read each word to students and have them mark one of the three columns: Know
(know and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the word; don't know meaning);
Don't Know
(don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out that
some of this week's words have synonyms (paces/steps; snug/tight). (For additional
practice with synonyms, see p. 169c.)
Context Clues • Synonyms
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them revise their usage
and definitions of vocabulary words.
Discuss the meanings of some of the vocabulary words with students. Ask the
following questions to help clarify word meanings.
  • How many paces is it from your front door to the curb?
  • Would your band like to play music at this year's summer festival?
  • How does a ballet dancer learn to be so graceful?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
