Sometimes when two vowels come together, two vowel sounds are heard.
  • Use word parts to decode words with the syllable pattern V/V.
  • Review words with the syllable pattern VCCCV.
  • Blend and read words with syllable patterns V/V and VCCCV.
  • Apply decoding strategies: blend longer words.

Generalization
When three consonants are together in the middle of a word, divide the word between the single consonant and the blend or digraph.
You may wish to explain the meanings of these words.

V/V Syllable Pattern
TEACH
Remind students that two vowels that appear in the same syllable often stand for one
sound. Write the words lion and trio.
  • How many vowels do you see in the word lion? (two)
  • How many vowel sounds do you hear? (two)
  • How many syllables does the word lion have? (two)
  • Do the two vowels that appear together stand for one sound? (No.)
Think AloudMODEL When I see a word that has two vowels in a row, I usually say one
vowel sound. But sometimes I can hear both vowels. That's because each
vowel is in a different syllable.
(Draw a line between i and o to divide lion into
syllables.)
When I divide the word into syllables, I can tell that the word is not
line. It is the two-syllable word lion.

Model blending lion and trio. Then have
students blend the words with you.

DECODE LONGER WORDS Write these words. Have students read them and
then draw a line between the two vowels that appear together but are pronounced
separately.

READ WORDS IN CONTEXT Write these sentences. Have individuals read them
and point out words with the V/V syllable pattern. Words with the V/V pattern
are underlined.
If we don't put fluid in the radiator, the engine will get hot.
After Mom finishes her science class, she will graduate.
I always stay with my grandparents during my annual trip to Ohio.
The poet will recite her poems in the auditorium.
To assess, observe whether students pronounce the V/V words correctly.

CONNECT Write this sentence: The children exchanged the gifts that did
not fit.
  • We learned to divide words that have three consonants in a row.
  • Read the sentence to yourself. Raise your hand when you see two words that have three consonants in a row. (children, exchange)
  • Where do we divide children into syllables? (between the l and the d)
  • Where do we divide exchange? (between the x and the c)
  • How did you know where to divide the words? (When a word has three consonants in
    the middle, divide it between the single consonant and the blend or digraph.)
Continue in the same way with the sentence Martha was thirsty after running the race.

DECODE LONGER WORDS Have individuals read the following words. Provide
help chunking and blending the words as needed.

READ WORDS IN CONTEXT Have students read these sentences. Then, to
check meaning, have them give their own sentence for the underlined word.
Mother complained about the constant noise.
