STRATEGY CONTEXT
CLUES Context clues are the words and
sentences around an unknown word.
Sometimes an author uses an antonym
as a context clue. An antonym is a word
that means the opposite of another
word. When you come across a word
you don't know, look for an antonym as
a context clue. The antonym can help
you figure out the meaning of the
unfamiliar word.
SKILL FACT AND OPINION A fact is a statement that
tells
something that can be proved true or false.
You
can prove a fact by reading
or asking an expert.
An opinion is a statement that tells someone's
ideas or
feelings. Words that express feelings,
such as favorite or wonderful, are
clues that a
statement might be an opinion.
STRATEGY TEXT STRUCTURE Text structure means the
way a writer
organizes or arranges a piece of writing.
For example, a writer uses words
such as however,
on the other hand, but, and although to signal that
he or
she is comparing and contrasting. A compare-
contrast structure often
contains both facts and
opinions. Good readers notice which statements
are facts and which are opinions.
