Target Skill STRATEGY CONTEXT
CLUES Context clues are the words and sentences around an unknown word. Sometimes an author uses an antonym as a context clue. An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word. When you come across a word you don't know, look for an antonym as a context clue. The antonym can help you figure out the meaning of the unfamiliar word.

Target Skill SKILL FACT AND OPINION A fact is a statement that
tells something that can be proved true or false.
You can prove a fact by reading or asking an expert.
An opinion is a statement that tells someone's
ideas or feelings. Words that express feelings,
such as favorite or wonderful, are clues that a
statement might be an opinion.
Target Skill STRATEGY TEXT STRUCTURE Text structure means the
way a writer organizes or arranges a piece of writing.
For example, a writer uses words such as however,
on the other hand, but,
and although to signal that
he or she is comparing and contrasting. A compare-
contrast structure often contains both facts and
opinions. Good readers notice which statements
are facts and which are opinions.
SKILL READ SILENTLY Reading silently means reading only to yourself. Good silent readers learn to block out noises and concentrate on what they are reading. They self-correct when they misread or skip a word.
