ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A THREE-COLUMN CHART (Graphic Organizer 26) about Senegal, Puerto
Rico, and Taiwan.
  • Give students two to three minutes to write as many things as they can about these
three countries, including details about location, languages, and customs.
  • Then have students write one question about each country.
  • Students should read for additional details for their chart as well as information that
    relates to their pre-reading questions.

used by Senegalese, Puerto Rican, and Taiwanese peoples. After students listen,

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and Don't Know.
Use the word rating chart (Graphic Organizer 4).
Read each word to students and have them mark one of the three columns: Know
(know and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the word; don't know meaning);
Don't Know
(don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out that
some of this week's words have antonyms (public/private; famous/unknown). (For
additional practice with antonyms, see p. 193c.)
Context Clues • Antonyms
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make changes to
their ratings.
Discuss the meanings of some of the vocabulary words. Ask the following questions
to help clarify word meanings.
  • Does that famous actor have fans all over the world?
  • What person do you admire the most?
  • Will you mention to your mother that I want to stay at your house this weekend?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
