VOCABULARY STRATEGY
Context Clues
Target Skill
ANTONYMS Remind students that sometimes context will contain an antonym that will be a good clue to learn the meaning of an unknown word. Create a chart showing a word they might not know underlined in a sentence with the word's antonym. Then have them give the definition of the word based on its antonym. Students can confirm word meaning using a dictionary.

BUILD CONCEPT VOCABULARY
Cultural Similarities
LOOKING BACK Remind students of the question of the week: How are communities and families similar around the world? Discuss how this week's Concept Web of vocabulary words relates to the theme of cultural similarities. Ask students if they have any words or categories to add. Discuss whether words and categories are appropriately related to the concept.
MOVING FORWARD Preview the title of the next selection, Good-Bye, 382 Shin Dang Dong. Ask students which Concept Web words might apply to the new selection based on the title alone. Put a star next to these words on the web.
Display the Concept Web and revisit the vocabulary words as you read the next selection to check predictions.

Listening Tips
SPEAKING
Informational Speech
SET-UP Have students use family experiences to prepare and deliver an informational speech about a cultural or family tradition.
ORGANIZATION Have students begin their speeches with a topic sentence telling the audience what family tradition they will talk about. Students can then discuss several facts about their tradition. Encourage them to include details, examples, and opinions. Students may wish to compare their tradition with others they are familiar with. Have students conclude their speeches with a one-sentence summary.
DELIVERY Provide time for students to rehearse their speeches aloud. Share these delivery suggestions:
  • Be familiar with your facts.
  • Speak in a loud, clear voice.
  • Vary volume as necessary.
LISTENING
Listen to a Speech

1.   What did you learn about this culture
from the speech? (Responses will vary.)
2.   Do you have a similar tradition in your
family? Describe your tradition and any similarities. (Responses will vary.)
3.   What else would you like to know about
