ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A WEB about moving to a new place.
  • Give students two to three minutes to brainstorm ideas of how it feels to move to a new place.
  • Have them use a web (Graphic Organizer 14) to record their ideas.
  • Explain that students should read for more ideas to add to their web.

WORD RATING CHART
Create story sequence charts to help students track the events, characters and setting
in a story. Use the story sequence chart (Graphic Organizer 8).
Read each word to students and have them mark one of the three columns: Know (know
and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the word; don't know meaning); Don't Know
(don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out that
some of this week's words are compound words (homesick, raindrops, airport). (For
additional practice with compound words, see p. 219c.)
Word Structure • Compound Words
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make changes to
their usage and definitions of vocabulary words.
Discuss the meaning of some vocabulary words. Ask the following questions to clarify
word meanings.
  • Would you get homesick if you were away at camp all summer?
  • What are some of your best memories from when you were very young?
  • Don't you think this is the most delicious pie you've ever tasted?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
