Target Skill Draw Conclusions
Target Skill Draw conclusions about facts and details in a selection.
Target Skill Summarize main ideas to draw conclusions.
INTRODUCE
Write these details: The farmer gets
up at 5:00
A.M. to milk the cows.
From 7:00
A.M. to noon, he plants
crops. In the afternoon, he weeds.
Late into the night, he cleans his
tools
. Then ask, "What does a
farmer do?" (milks cows, plants,
weeds, cleans tools)
"What is it like
to be a farmer?" (It is hard work.)
Point out that students have drawn a
conclusion about farming after
summarizing what a farmer does.
Read aloud the information on
p. 220. Explain the following:
  • Drawing a conclusion means
    arriving at a decision.
  • Summarizing the main ideas
in a selection can help you
    draw conclusions.
Use Skill Transparency 24 to teach draw conclusions and summarize.
TEACH
1  SKILL Use paragraphs 1 and 2
to model how to draw
conclusions.
Think AloudMODEL From these two paragraphs, I can conclude that bakers do lots of things.
They make lots of treats. They work in different places.
2  STRATEGY Work with
students to summarize the
article.
Think Aloud MODEL To summarize, I
need to figure out the main
ideas. I know that bakers
are busy. They work in many different places. They make many things. They have to watch, listen, and practice.
PRACTICE AND ASSESS
SKILL Possible response: Bakers
have busy jobs.
STRATEGY Possible response: A
baker has an interesting and
exciting job. Bakers make tasty
treats. They work in different
places. They study hard to learn
how to bake.
WRITE Have students complete
steps 1 and 2 of the Write to Read activity. You might consider using this as a whole class activity.
Monitor Progress
then… use Practice Book 3.2, p. 83 to provide practice.

Draw Conclusions
Skill Here is a good
place to stop and
draw a conclusion.
What conclusion
can you draw about
bakers?
Have you ever helped an adult bake something?
A baker is a person who makes baked goods for a
living. A baker makes bread, cakes, pies, and many
other tasty treats!
Strategy
Good readers stop often and sum up
what they’ve read so far. This helps
them understand what they have read
and provides background for drawing
conclusions. A summary lists the
important ideas without the details.
Strategy: Summarize
What
I Know
Many bakers learn their job by
working with experienced bakers. They
watch, listen, and practice on the job.
Some bakers go to special schools to
learn how to bake.
Bakers need to know what kinds of treats
people in their neighborhood like. This helps
them know what to make and how much
to make.
Some bakers work in large stores, some work
in small neighborhood bakeries, and some work in
restaurants. Baked goods must be fresh, so bakers
often get up early in the morning to make goods to
be sold the same day.
Write to Read
2. Use the graphic organizer to
    write a paragraph that tells
some of the things a baker
    does. Use your conclusion
    as the topic sentence for
    your paragraph.
1. Read “What Does a Baker
    Do?” and make a graphic
    organizer like the one above.
Strategy This
is the end of a
short passage and
a good spot to
summarize what
you’ve read.
Bakers must know how to follow a
recipe. Some bakers like to experiment and
create their own recipes for their customers’
favorite baked goods. Working as a baker
can be an exciting career!

Beginning/Intermediate For a Picture It! lesson on draw conclusions and summarize, see the ELL Teaching Guide, pp. 162–163.
Advanced Before students read “What Does a Baker Do?" activate prior knowledge about baking. List on the board baking terms and types of baked goods; then discuss.
Target Skill Draw Conclusions Write several details on the board. (For example: The sun shines brightly. The children play in the pool. An ice cream cone melts on the sidewalk.) Then work with the class to draw the conclusion that it is summertime.
