Target Skill STRATEGY CONTEXT
CLUES Context clues are words and sentences around an unknown word. Sometimes during reading, you may come across an unfamiliar word. You can find clues to that word's meaning in the surrounding context.

Target Skill SKILL DRAW CONCLUSIONS To draw a conclusion
means to make a decision or form an opinion
after reading and thinking about details and facts.
You can also use what you already know to help
you draw conclusions.
Target Skill STRATEGY SUMMARIZE When you summarize, you
recall a story's most important events or go over
the main ideas of a piece of writing. Good readers
stop often and summarize what they've read so far.
Summarizing help them understand what they
have read and gives them information for drawing
conclusions.
SKILL CHARACTERIZATION Characterization is the way an author describes and portrays a character. You show characterization by using different tones of voice for different characters as you read a selection.
