Read each sentence.
Use a thesaurus to find a synonym for the underlined word.
Replace the underlined word in each sentence with a word that means about the same.
Write the new sentences.

Some groups do not slaughter animals for food.
EARLY FINISHERS Make a list of other words with ough or augh that have the vowel sound of the word ball. Write a sentence using each word.

Write a how-to article.
Write suggestions for how to run a successful bakery.
Mention the location, hours, appearance, equipment, staff, and offerings of the bakery.

EARLY FINISHERS Enter the article on the computer. Format it to look like a newspaper article. Print it out and proofread it.

Write a recipe for a food you like.
Make up a recipe for a favorite food.
At the top of an index card, name the food. Mention the ethnic connection in the name.
Below the name, list the amount of each ingredient in the order it is added.
Then list the steps to use in creating the food.
EARLY FINISHERS Use the Internet to research the amount of calories, fats, sugars, carbohydrates, and proteins in one serving of the food. Write this on the back of the recipe card.
MATERIALS Computer, examples of magazine ads
Use a computer to make an ad for the bakery.
Design a magazine ad for Panederia on scrap paper. Jot down information from the story to include in the ad.
Use a word processor to create the ad.
Be creative. Use color, different kinds of lettering, border designs, and so on.
Print out a draft copy of the ad and carefully proofread it.
Make corrections and print out the ad in final form.
