  • Give students two minutes to write three questions they would like to find out about Mexican food. Write several of them on the KWL chart.
  • Remind students to read for answers to their questions. Later, they can add what they learned to the L column of the chart.

Introduce Vocabulary
WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and Don't Know. Use the word rating chart (Graphic Organizer 4).
Read each word to students and have them mark one of the three columns: Know (know
and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the word; don't know meaning); Don't Know
(don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out that some
words may be unfamiliar and require students to use context clues to determine meaning.
(For additional practice with context clues, see p. 243c.)
Unfamiliar Words • Context Clues
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make changes to their ratings.
Discuss the meanings of some vocabulary words with students. Ask the following questions
to clarify word meanings.
  • What ingredients did you put in this cake to make it taste so good?
  • Were these pancakes made with a mixture of flour, eggs, and milk?
  • If you walk past the bakery, will you stop and buy me an apple pie?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
