VOCABULARY STRATEGY
Context Clues
Target Skill
UNFAMILIAR WORDS Remind students that they can use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Have students list any unknown words they encountered as they read Jalapeño Bagels. They can create a chart showing the unknown word, helpful context clues, and their definition of the word based on its context. Students can confirm word meanings using a dictionary.

BUILD CONCEPT VOCABULARY
Ethnic Foods
LOOKING BACK Remind students of the focus question of the week: How can food from different cultures be mixed? Discuss how this week’s Concept Web of vocabulary words relates to the theme of cultural foods. Ask students if they have any words or categories to add. Discuss whether words and categories are appropriately related to the concept.

SPEAKING
Persuasive Speech
SET-UP Students prepare a 3- or 4-minute speech that tries to persuade customers to buy jalapeño bagels.
PLANNING Students need to plan the best way to approach customers with this persuasive speech. Have them consider reasons why customers might be opposed to these kinds of bagels, then counter each reason with a well thought-out argument. Encourage students to use persuasive words—words that express their opinions and the reasons for them.
AUDIENCE Remind students that their audience will be other students acting as customers. Students need to consider emotions and select words that “talk to” and hopefully persuade.
VIEWING
Analyze Ads
Have students view several advertisements for products in newspapers or magazines. Then have them answer these questions orally or in writing.
  1. How does advertising help sell a product? (Possible response: People see the product in the paper and then decide they need it or want it.)
  2. How do these ads help sell products? Are there descriptions or pictures? (Possible response: There is a picture of the car and a list of what's inside. This helps sell the car because people can see what they are buying and know what to expect.)
  3. Would you buy any of these things because of their ads? Why or why not? (Responses will vary.)
