Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 6–8 of the Leveled Reader East Meets West: Japan and America, emphasizing accuracy, appropriate pace, rate, and expression. Have students note that you read all the words at the proper pace and rate. Point out how your voice changed at exclamation points. Then read pp. 10–11 in a word-by-word monotone voice, making some mistakes. Have students tell which reading sounded better. Discuss how a selection may be misunderstood if the words and sentences aren’t read correctly with accuracy, appropriate pace, rate, and expression.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from East Meets West: Japan and America with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
