If…students have difficulty reading story words from the Decodable Reader,
then…reteach them by modeling blending or reading multisyllabic words.
If…partners have difficulty reading the Leveled Reader on their own,

Leveled Reader The American Dream: Coming to the United States
REINFORCE CONCEPTSThis week's concept is cultural similarities. People and communities all around the world are alike in many ways. Think about someone from another country you
know or saw in a movie. How are your lives the same?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 6 This photo shows a family of immigrants on their way to live in the United States. How do you think they feel? (tired, scared, hopeful)
p. 8 This photo shows a poor section of a city in Egypt. How is life for these people different from life where you live?
Read pp. 3–4 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 5–10. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: What are some reasons immigrants come to the United States?
