If…students have difficulty reading story words from the Decodable Reader,
then…reteach them by modeling blending or reading multisyllabic words.
If…partners have difficulty reading the Leveled Reader on their own,
then…have them follow along as they listen to the Online Leveled Reader Audio.
Suki's Kimono Group Time
Leveled Reader East Meets West: Japan and America
REINFORCE CONCEPTSThis week's concept is dressing differently. People around the world dress in many different ways. What kinds of different clothing have you seen people from other cultures wear?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 4 The family in this photo is celebrating Japanese New Year. What do you notice about their clothes? (They all wear pants and tops. The clothes are bright red and purple and have patterns on them.)
p. 8 This Japanese girl is wearing a kimono. What questions would you ask her about it? (When do you wear a kimono? Is it comfortable?)
Read pp. 4–5 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 6–9. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: Which Japanese holiday would you like to celebrate?

V/V SYLLABLE PATTERN Write and read coat. Remind students that two vowels that appear in the same syllable often stand for one sound. Then write ruin. When I see a word that has two vowels in a row, I usually say one vowel sound. But sometimes when two vowels come together, two vowel sounds are heard. That's because each vowel is in a separate syllable. (Draw a line between u and i to divide ruin into syllables.) This word is the two-syllable word ruin.Model blending ruin. Then help students blend the word. Repeat with poet.
