Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 4–5 of the Leveled Reader A Child’s Life in Korea, using expression, emphasizing important words, and raising and lowering your voice appropriately. Have students note how you use your voice. Then read the same pages again in a monotone. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how reading with proper expression and tone makes the selection easier to understand.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from A Child’s Life in Korea with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
