BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text, focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 3 This selection tells what bread is like in different countries. Are all the loaves of bread alike in this photograph? (No, some are round; some are long.) Yes, the caption says that breads come in as many varieties as there are countries of the world.
pp. 4–5 What kinds of bread do you see in these photographs? (bagels, tortillas) Breads from different cultures, like these, are now common foods in the United States.
Read pp. 3–4 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 5–7. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: What are some kinds of breads you read about, and where did they come from? (bagel, Poland; tortilla, Mexico: chapati, India; pita, Middle East)
