Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader The World of Bread, following punctuation clues for pausing and grouping words in meaningful phrases. Have students note your pausing and phrasing. Then read p. 3 again without following punctuation clues or grouping words. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how following punctuation clues and reading in phrases creates a rhythm and helps readers and listeners understand the text.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The World of Bread with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should read three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this group using p. 243a.
