MODEL Read aloud pp. 9–10 of the Leveled Reader Kapuapua’s Magic Shell, emphasizing different tones of voice for each character as well
as the narrator. Have students note the changes in your voice. Discuss how reading with different tones
of voice to represent characters and the narrator helps readers and listeners enjoy the story and understand
it better.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages containing dialogue of characters from Kapuapua’s Magic Shell with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group were assessed in Week 3.
