Read Leveled Reader A Walk Around the City
A Walk Around the CityREINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is changing environments. People live in all different kinds of environments, such as in cities, suburbs, or the country. What kind of environment is our school in?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
pp. 4–5 What types of buildings do you see on these pages? (buildings in a row, tall apartment building, houses) These are examples of the different kinds of buildings you might see in a city.
p. 9 What are the people in these two small pictures doing? (shopping) Yes, in the circle photograph, the man is shopping for books. In the photograph at the bottom, people are shopping for food.
Read pp. 3–5 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 6–9. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: What kinds of things do people do in the city? (live, work, buy)

SUFFIXES -y, -ish, -hood, -ment Remind students that a suffix is a word part
added to the end of a base word. Write oily.
The word oily has a suffix. What is
it?
(-y) What is the base word? (oil) Say the base word and suffix: oil y. Model
blending oily. Then have students blend it with you.
The suffix -y means "having"

(full of oil) Repeat this process with boyish,
motherhood,
