Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud p. 3 of the Leveled
Reader Bobby’s New Apartment, emphasizing
appropriate phrasing. Have students note how you
read entire groups of words instead of reading
word-by-word. Explain that you do this in order to
better imitate the natural flow of spoken language. Discuss how reading in meaningful phrases helps readers better understand what they read.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from
Bobby’s New Apartment with a partner or individually.
For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four
times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide
corrective feedback. Assess any student you have
not checked during this unit.
