SEQUENCE
MONITOR AND FIX UP
LESSON VOCABULARY airport, curious, delicious, described, farewell, homesick, memories, raindrops
SUMMARY A child's life in Korea is similar in some ways to a child's life in the U.S., but there are many differences. Korean customs and holidays are all described in this book.
INTRODUCE THE BOOK
BUILD BACKGROUND Invite students to talk about friends who live in other parts of the world. Ask: How are your friends' schools different from or similar to your school?
PREVIEW/ILLUSTRATIONS Have students preview the book by looking at the illustrations. Ask students to discuss how they help convey what this book will be about.
TEACH/REVIEW VOCABULARY Invite students to look up each of the vocabulary words and find out how each word is divided into syllables. Invite them to identify the compounds. (raindrops, farewell, airport, homesick)

Write each of the vocabulary words on an index card. Have students take turns drawing cards and acting something out for others to guess the word.
TARGET SKILL AND STRATEGY
SEQUENCE Remind students that
sequence is the order in which things happen. Explain that clue words are not always present. Invite students to tell how to do something in order, using clue words as appropriate.
MONITOR AND FIX UP Remind students that good readers check themselves often to make sure they are understanding what they are reading. They recognize when they have stopped understanding and know some
fix-up strategies to restore understanding. Challenge students, as they read, to ask themselves: What is the author trying to tell us? Does this make sense? Explain that tracking the sequence of information can help them better understand what they are reading.
