INTRODUCE THE BOOK
BUILD BACKGROUND Ask students to name as many different kinds of bread as they can think of. Ask them if they have ever baked or helped baked bread. What was the process? What is their favorite kind of bread?
PREVIEW/SIDEBARS Have students read all the sidebars in the story. What can students learn about the text as a whole from reading the sidebars?

Have students talk about what type of bread is made in their home countries. What is the word for
bread in their home languages?
TEACH/REVIEW VOCABULARY To reinforce the contextual meaning of the word knead on page 3, discuss how the phrase “and shapes it into a batch of loaves" gives a clue about the meaning.
TARGET SKILL AND STRATEGY
DRAW CONCLUSIONS Remind students that
drawing a conclusion means making a decision that makes sense after thinking about some facts or details. Have students think about the following question while they read and see if they can draw any conclusions from the text to answer it: Why are there so many different types of bread in the United States?
SUMMARIZE Remind students that
summarizing means explaining a text by reducing it to its main points. Ask students to summarize a familiar story such as
Jack and the Beanstalk.
READ THE BOOK
Use the following questions to support comprehension.
PAGE 4 What is unusual about the process of making a bagel? (It is boiled before baking.)
PAGES 5–6 What do the tortilla and chapati have in common? (Both are round and flat.)
PAGE 10 Summarize the story of how pizza was invented. (A baker in Italy made it as a treat for the queen. He made it on flat bread with the colors of the flag of Italy: tomatoes (red), cheese (white), and basil (green).)
